Link Between Brain Cancer and Cell Phone Use… Dropped

All those free nights and weekends have been a little less inviting these past few years as worries over cell phone related brain cancer have risen. But scientists in Denmark have proven there’s no danger in picking up that handset – at least when it comes to cancer.

Researchers came to these results after combing over health records of hundreds of thousands of Danish cell phone users. They were particularly interested in long-term cell phone users, those who have been using the devices for 13 years or more. The results? These long-term users had about the same risk for cancer as non-heavy users.

It’s important to note that this study addresses the risk of long-term cell phone use, but not heavy cell phone use. The author of this study, Patrizia Frei, pointed this out. She also added that “There are still some open questions, about greater amounts of use, and about the effects on children.”

The initial worry that cell phones could cause cancer was brought up by the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Suggestions were made that consumers attempt to text more or to use hands-free sets in order to reduce radiation exposure. The IARC has not given any sort of formal response to the information brought up in this new study.
