17 Cancer Fighting Foods and Spices

A variety of foods contain different elements that help fight cancer, such as antioxidants and free radicals, even phytochemicals that are yet to be further studied by scientists. Eating the different variants of cancer fighting foods may just extend quality life.


Tumor sizes have said to be reduced and cancer cell growth is inhibited with the help of the following foods:


Avocados are a good source of potassium – even more than the famous banana.  Also, it gives a good supply of beta-carotene. However, it’s known for the antioxidant known as glutathione which attacks free radicals in the body. It blocks the absorption of certain fats in the intestinal track and may also be helpful in the treatment of viral hepatitis, helping to prevent liver cancer.


Tomatoes attack free radicals through lycopene, which is more produced during the hotter weather.  Studies in Israel have proven that lycopene can eliminate cancer cells in the mouth and reduce the risk of breast, prostate, pancreas, and colorectal cancer. This nutrient rich superfood is also a good sour

ce of vitamin C, which prevents cellular damage that leads to cancer. This is more concentrated in cooked tomatoes. For better absorption, the body must have a good level of oil that goes along with lycopene.


Broccoli, specially sprouts, contain the phytochemical sulforaphane that helps in preventing some types of colon and rectal cancer. Sulforaphane aids to produce enzymes that deactivate certain carcinogens and free radicals. Broccoli sprouts have been developed under the name BroccoSprouts, which contains the same amount of sulforaphane, only 20 times higher than normally found in mature broccoli heads.


Cabbage and Cauliflower, like broccoli, contains a chemical component that can fight against breast cancer called indole-3-carbinol, which promotes estrogen to a more protective variant.


Carrots, a healthy source of beta carotene, help reduce mouth, throat, lung, stomach, intestine, bladder, prostate, and breast cancer. Although some research showed that too much daily intake of carrots (2-3 kg) can actually cause cancer, the Danish Institute of Agricultural Sciences (DIAS) actually found that exposure to falcarinol reduce the growth of isolated cancer cells.


Figs also have been reported to be highly effective in shrinking tumors, as scientists have studied it to be a derivative of benzaldehyde at the Institute of Physical and Chemical Research in Tokyo. Figs also improve weight loss efforts and have been proven a potent killer of bacteria, in addition to it as a source of vitamins A and C, calcium, potassium, and magnesium.


Flax which contains lignans have an antioxidant effects that may block and suppress cancerous changes. It also contains omega – 3 fatty acids, which helps to protect against heart disease and colon cancer.


Garlic contains dialyl sultides, an allium compound that increa

ses the activity of immune cells that fight cancer and breaks down cancer causing substances. Dialyl sulfide, which is found in garlic oil has been proven to render cancer cells in the liver inactive. Together with onion, leeks, and chives, garlic has been als

o proven to lower the risk of stomach and colon cancer.


According to a study conducted by Dr. Lenore Arab of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, those who eat garlic (raw or cooked) on a regular basis faces only half the risk of stomach cancer and two thirds the risk of colorectal cancer, as opposed to those who consume very little or none.


Grapefruit is believed to help prevent cancer through the monoterpenes it contains that sweeps carcinogens out of the body. Studies also show that breast cancer cell proliferation has been proven to be stopped by grapefruit, which is also a good source of vitamin C, beta carotene, and folic acid.


Grapes, especially red grapes are a rich source of the powerful antioxidants bioflavonoids that work as cancer preventives. It also contains resveratrol, inhibiting the enzymes that are responsible for immune suppression and cancer growth. Ellagic acid, which helps slow the growth of tumors, is also found in grapes.


Kale is a source of nitrogen compounds that aid in the prevention of the conversion of lesions into certain cancerous cells, especially in estrogen- sensitive tissues. Phytochemicals known as isothocyanates which suppress the growth of tumors and block cancer causing substances are also found in kale.

Mushrooms, several kinds have been known to contain polysaccharides; powerful compounds that help build immunity. They also contain lectin, a protein that attacks cancer cells and prevents its multiplication. Along with Beta Glucan and Thioproline, mushrooms can also stimulate interferon production in the body.


Nuts suppress the growth of cancers through the antioxidants quercetin and campferol. Selenium is richly found in Brazil nut, which is essential for prostate cancer. Unfortunately, for allergic responses such as tightening of the throat, mouth itching, wheezing etc which may occur after intake, selenium supplements should be considered.


Raspberries contain anthcyanins, antioxidants that help protect against cancer. According to Cancer Research, esophageal tumors decrease in diets containing 5% black raspberries. Black raspberries als

Teas: Green Tea and Black Tea are rich sources of polyphenols, antioxidants that prevent cancer cells from dividing. Green tea is a better source than the common black tea, together with red wine and olive oil. Dry green tea leaves contain 40% polyphenols, reducing the risk of stomach, colon, rectum, liver, pancreas, and lung cancer.


There are other nutritionally loaded foods not included on this list that have incredible health benefits.  The important thing to remember is that foods that help sustain optimal health are minimally processed and do not contain any antibiotics, hormones, sweeteners, food colors, and other mechanically engineered ingredient.
